6TH GRADE MATH
In sixth grade, a one hour long math period is held every full day of instruction during the school year. The first ten minutes of math period begins with a famous mathematician or math moment in history or math in art sequence. A brief in-class calisthenics exercise and prayer to the Holy Spirit follows, before students begin working at their own pace on the individual math material assigned. In addition to the math period, the teacher is available to teach individual or group math concepts during after-school tutor sessions.
At the beginning of the school year, each student is assessed as to their math level placement, and then families are given the option to choose from one of the following two classroom curriculum offerings: Khan Academy or Math Mammoth. [This choice may be changed at any time during the school year].
Math Mammoth and Khan Academy curriculums both focus on conceptual understanding. Concepts are explained with visual models, followed by exercises using those models. In Khan Academy, all exercises and quizzes are done online, and in Mammoth Math, all exercises and quizzes are done on paper.
Inline with state and national 6th grade math standard subjects, the math units covered in the 6th grade are:
(Unit 6.1) Ratios, rates, & percentages
(Unit 6.2) Arithmetic operations
(Unit 6.3) Negative numbers
(Unit 6.4) Properties of numbers
(Unit 6.5) Variables & expressions
(Unit 6.6) Equations & inequalities introduction
(Unit 6.7) Geometry
(Unit 6.8) Data and statistics
