- The Angelic Order of the Cherubim and the Topaz gemstone
THE TOPAZ GEMSTONE IS ASSIGNED TO THE ANGELIC ORDER OF THE CHERUBIM.
St. Thomas Aquinas writes of the Cherubim:
"The Cherubim comes from a certain excess of knowledge; hence it is interpreted "fullness of knowledge," which Dionysius (Coel. Hier. vii) expounds in regard to four things: the perfect vision of God; the full reception of the Divine Light; their contemplation in God of the beauty of the Divine order; and in regard to the fact that the Cherubim are always radiant with the light of the knowledge of God, His mysteries and His Wisdom. Possessing this knowledge fully, they pour it forth copiously upon others."
[Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas, Prima Pars, 50-119, Reply, Obj 5.
Second and Revised Edition, 1920; Literally translated by Fathers of the English Dominican Province.]
St. Dimitri notes:
"Being themselves enlightened, they enlighten others. Their name "cherubim" in translation from the Hebrew language, means: "great understanding" or "effusion of wisdom.""
[Serfes. Fr Demetrius. Orthodox Teachings on the Holy Angels. (reprint) Minea of St. Dimitry of Rostov.
Orthodox Life. December 1968.]
